Garth Brooks and Teammates for Kids hosted a youth soccer camp for almost 90 children from the greater Newark area on December 1. Players from the New York Red Bulls coached the young athletes through various soccer drills and relays at the NJIT Wellness & Events Center. This event was the 70th youth sports camp sponsored by Garth Brooks and Teammates for Kids during Brooks' tour. Brooks, who performed three concerts at the Prudential Center, visited the camp to cheer the kids on and talk to them about the importance of loving one another and being good teammates.
Leading the coaching staff were six players from the New York Red Bulls MLS team: defender Connor Lade from New Jersey; goalkeeper Ryan Meara from New York; midfielder Felipe Martins from Parana, Brazil; midfielder Alex Muyl from New York; forward Derrick Etienne from New Jersey; and midfielder Tyler Adams from New York. All of these players are Teammates who proudly support the foundation's mission.
The young athletes, who ranged in age from 9-13, represented Just One Soccer League; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson & Union Counties; Greater Life Newark; Youth Development Clinic; Boys & Girls Club of Newark; and Tickets for Kids Charities. They attended the camp at no cost thanks to scholarships provided by Teammates for Kids.
Teammates For Kids presents the Good Teammate Award at each youth sports camp they sponsor. The award recognizes the young athletes who best demonstrate the traits of a Total Teammate, including leadership, toughness, unselfishness, and respect for the game and all of its participants. In Newark, Good Teammate Awards were presented to: Jonathan Condor, age 7; Victoria Mocarski, age 12; and Mohammed Elassa, age 13.
Teammates will continue to partner with Brooks to hold youth sports camps at every city on his World Tour. Brooks and Teammate athletes in each city will volunteer their time to coach kids in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, or soccer.
