Garth Brooks is briefly returning to the diamond to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Teammates. The Pirates are the fourth team to sign Garth to a spring training contract. Previously he has taken the field with the San Diego Padres (1999), New York Mets (2000) and the Kansas City Royals (2004).
Brooks is a life-long Pirates fan, “Pittsburgh was my thing, I don’t know why … Just loved them form the beginning, and probably because of Roberto. And from there, Pittsburgh’s the only city with all black and gold everything.” Garth went on to tell the story of his childhood pledge to Roberto Clemente in 1972. The day after the Pirates legend died on New Year’s Eve in a plane crash while attempting to bring aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, Garth made a promise that he would do something in baseball. In 1999 Teammates For Kids was created with the support of 67 Major League Baseball players and now with Garth wearing the black and gold of Pittsburgh, “it brings it full circle”.
